F1 will definitely switch to V8 engines - what we know

My God, what a load of FIA nonsense.

1. We need “clean” energy, meaning hybrid powertrains.

2. We need bigger batteries to compete with the e-GP.

3. We don’t need steering wheels; we need tablets with 130 buttons so gamers have a chance too.

4. The manufacturers (Audi, Cadillac, Honda) are only getting into F1 because it’s become more cost-effective.

5. Oh wait, no, we do need V8 engines (with or without a battery?).

6. If we were organized like FIFA, this would have been settled long ago with a bribe, and I’d be president for life (?).

7. We absolutely need an FIA Peace Prize and less press freedom.

8. The license fees for F1 drivers (€1M) are set way too low.

Sarcasm off

The "V8 is coming" back to F1 - that's the pledge of FIA president Mohammed Ben Sulayem.

And yes, that will mean abandoning the current divisive V6 hybrids and their near-50/50 split between internal combustion and electrical power.

I'm calling it, they will still sounds worse than the Carrera Cup cars. This is F1 we are talking about here. Watch them go and approve high revving V8s with hybrid and then ruin it by slapping turbos on them.

— @party_boy69

We take a look at the timeline for that change, how F1's got here (just four rounds into the new era), and which manufacturers are onboard.

00:00 The V8 is coming

Even V6 with turbo is much better than hybrid, the cost of this cars is astronomical, and we will have drivers racing against others instead racing against their own car.

— @oscarmwilson

02:24 The timing

05:35 A "mega engine"?

They will probably go to v8 turbos which would completely defeat the purpose going to v8’s

— @ajegelin

07:31 Who's onboard

08:53 A course-correction?

I imagine much more of the world would have moved closer to electrification in another 5 years, also with legislation, and many of the manufacturers and their motorsport divisions will be further down that road as well as a result. This is a silly move, there must be a way to produce more noise from current ICE as well as a sensible way to manage the electrical harvesting and deployment, this is the pinnacle, figure it out now not later.

Why does F1 need to have road car relevance though? This isn't BTCC touring cars, where a win on Sunda,y is a car sale on Monday. We need to get back to the purity of F1 and perhaps do more of 70/30 hybrid powertrain power split at most, and less reliance on electrical harvesting. V8/V10 N/A would be the ultimate dream, but I guess Liberty shareholders won't be happy who have shares in battery tech

Periodically brining up that Twat Dominicalli is just the race fudging up the narrative. That twat never wanted v8/10s, the race is brining his reference in the video just to show that he was also someone who wanted it

Huh. I guess I'll go back to watching F1 in 2030-31. I don't know if i will still be interested by then though.

No more Formula Battery Management???

@PeterbFree

Electrification is being pushed back around the world? What a lot of nonsense.

@timangus

Excellent, just another 5 years of this formula then 😏

@gitlyndon

Why V8 ? Fans want V10 and V12.

@hungrysurfer9471
@

Goodbye F1. What BS

@doofercall
@

Why do you call an Internal Combustion Engine a "Combustion engine" ? A steam engine is a combustion engine. A jet engine is a combustion engine. F1 doesn't use those types of engines does it?

@frogandspanner
@

Just bring the 2400cc V8 engines of the previous era, and 150hp KERS to be used at the driver's discretion when/where.

@MrBahjatt
@

Screw 2031. Let’s do this asap

@thaddaeuslawrence
@

Well I know myself and my f1 friend group stopped watching. It’s a fucking joke, no pinnacle of racing anymore. Shit cars and worse racing. Seriously fuck the fia and those involved. Teams, drivers, and fans told you this was happening, and you told us to fuck off. Here’s to f1 losing billions.

@FlariduhRye
@

Super Charged, Twin Turbo V8's. No Battery, FFS.

@barrypope4358
@

Wow Christian was right all along. I wonder how much money has been wasted on this current era, which will run for 4-5 years. We still have to wait a longgggggg time for new engines. Got to wait for half a decade.

I think the FIA should set broad parameters like fuel flow, fuel capacity, materials, weight, cost and let the manufacturers decide what they want to produce.

@jims6614
@

Short Stroke NA V8 engines... Would be a wet dream and a half.

@BlacDarg
@

THX !
but > can we be just honest ? > will they DROP EV-STUFF ??
i refuse to watch these AI-RACES with this overengineered, twisted, artificial reglements
> going for NASCAR instead atm.
> SIMPLE MOTOR-SOUND-SKILL
THATS MOTORsport - not electric bots

@Aeroflyer007
@

See you in 2031. Bye

@jacobpedersen6637
@

It doesn't take rocket science or hindsight to realize these regs were shit. The switch to hybrid turbo V6s in 2014 was the stupidest things F1 has ever done & these current regs are even worse with the 50/50 bs. Stupidity in the name of pleasing shareholders

@NicotineRosberg

We believe it, when we see it!

This comment section is proof people will hate no matter what, even if what they complain about is being fixed.

@zephyrie1-d5f
@

sustainable fuel and the current engines doesnt go hand in hand, its like buying a million dollar car and expect a good mileage

@anurag15271
@

Why? The ICE bit is not the problem, it just needs a bit more fuel flow.

@sidewalkere
@

Wake me upwhen 2030 ends

@rollyipsc
@

Now they just need a new head of the fia

@williamf9633
@

2031? They want to see how far they can stretch this crap

@DoomSlayer-b5y
@

It's a shame they fucked up the hybrids so badly because we're going to be right back to DRS or no overtakes after this switch back

@dereklush9399
@

Great and for the time being, lets remove the batteries, Motors, Controllers, Cables and cooling systems and reduce the car weight by 100kg.
This will eliminate Clipping and return the full control of the car to the driver and improve lap times because theres nothing wrong with the V6s

@RIPPERTON
@

I'm glad all the whiners are threatening to leave. Maybe ticket prices will go down.

@BobK58
@

in my opinion, F1 should just try yo promote carbon neutral fuel more than hybrid. ofc a bit like KERS (2009-2013) is okay, but I am in the Bring Back V10s camp, so I would think that carbon neutral fuel, and to developp how cheap it can be made for the general public would be the best option. It would have some electricity going tho not as much as since 2014, but it would also please those like me, wanting V8s or V10s, also drivers with raw machines.
If you think something else i'm free to debate but don't insult without arguments,
May the peace be with y'all

@rafeak5983
@

I would have liked 2.5L NA V10 + AWD dual motor hybrid system with unlimited regen + torque vectoring.

@vorpalinferno9711
@

Maybe because I'm an American but WHY the sudden push the last decade to be more "green" and more "carbon neutral"? Its motorsport, the entire point is to go fast. I don't know any one from fan to engineer that wanted MORE battery power. Like where did the push even come from?? I don't get it.

@coreytrevor3910
@

I'm for dumping the electric all together as reducing it doesn't really reduce the complexity and cost, you just spend the money to reduce the effectiveness of that part of the powertrain. It's only the manufacturers wanting to push their green agenda - while they fly around the world in private jets - that want to continue this abomination of a compromise The manufacturers have always come and gone at will so leaning too far just to please them is foolish. If they don't want to continue, just produce a spec V8 or V10 engine and mandate use by all the teams which would be cheaper for everyone.

Let's be honest, the rules are written with the intention to produce a spec engine anyway given that those that are down on power are allowed additional development. And from a marketing and fan base perspective, the huge recent growth is down to marketing activities such as Drive to Survive etc. and few of these fans have come from a background of motorsport appreciation and fewer still even understand the nuances of the powertrain, to them it's mainly about the personalities.

@raydavison2972
@

Make them hydrogen fuelled

@craigwotton493
@

Get rid of the battery. Period.

@fitch8363
@

So frustrating that they're just now realizing what F1 needs.

@MotoDude1967
@

Audi might be livid about that. They joined F1 because of the Hybrid Era. Lets see if they might sell the team again.

@schomski2502
@

The manufacturers want to be seen to be green, so no need for any of them to be hesitant, because green fuel should be a priority for all engines. Why can't it happen sooner? F1 pioneers the fuels and soon after it will become mainstream. Win win!

@SteveB-o5q
@

Just like this rule set and the previous set. The teams and engine manufacturers will negotiate and compromise the crap out of the original great idea, into an awful state.

@ScottMoyse
@

They will need to do it before 2031 or there won't be anyone left watching the sport.

@BlackCat0315
@

The engine regs are just too strict. Why mandate a V8 at all? Just put a displacement cap on it and let the manufacturers innovate. They might all settle on V8s, but some might choose a V10 or V12.

I’d like to see a return to the older regs where manufacturers have a choice between a smaller, boosted engine or a large, naturally aspirated engine.

@wjspade
@

Switching to V8’s but keeping turbos and batteries fixes nothing. The sport needs normally aspirated V8’s that run on sustainable fuels. If certain manufacturers don’t like it, they can leave. The reality is most manufacturers won’t. There’s too much money to be made
